Mountain biking
In the mid 1980's an approximately 25km track was developed along the northern side of the Ashburton River from Ashburton to the coast. Over the years maintenance on the track fell away and the track deteriorated, becoming overgrown, rutted and difficult to use.
The since 2008 the track has been reclaimed by mountain bike riding enthusiasts and walkers. There is now a River Trail Challenge race held in January each year with tracks on both sides of the Ashburton River totalling over 40km.
With the growth of mountain biking in the last few years a number of races and rides in the Mid Canterbury district have become popular for both recreational and experienced riders. The Mid Canterbury Mountain Bike Club was formed in July 2010. For the serious or recreational rider view the Mid-Canterbury Mountain Bike club website and contact directly for those "off the beaten track" rides. Click HERE!

Paint ball - Lake Hood Ashburton
Paintball is a combination of the childhood games "tag" and "hide & seek," but is much more challenging and sophisticated. Although there are many different game formats, typically a group of players will divide into two teams to play "capture the flag." The number of players on each team in the NPPL can vary, but there are only 7 players allowed on each side of the field.
The object of the game is to go out and capture the other team's flag while protecting your own. While you are trying to capture a flag, you also try to eliminate opposing players by tagging them with a paintball expelled from a special airgun called a "marker." Games run a maximum of 10 minutes.
Between games, players take a break to check their equipment, get more paintballs and have a snack or soda while they share stories about the thrills of victory and the usually funny agonies of defeat. Win or lose, everyone has a good time and there's usually the next game waiting for you.

Trott's Gardens - a garden of national significance
The dappled woodland areas offer garden rooms planted with unusual shrubs and trees, followed by vistas of immaculate lawn. Emphasis on the choice and placement of trees and shrubs means the garden is equally stunning in form and colour, all year round.
Structures are a feature of this area and include a gazebo, belvedere, large dove cote, and frames for pleaching.
Some 50 species of magnolia, 70 different kinds of maples and 40 different varieties of the dogwood family give some idea of the scale of the woodland area, then add hundreds of rhododendrons and azaleas, under planted with flowering woodland plants and ground covers.

Mt Sunday - Edoras "Lord of the Rings" - Land of the people of Rohan
Journey to the remote and beautiful Mt Potts high country station, home of Mt Sunday; see how this peaceful mountain was transformed into Edoras, the capital city of the Rohan people in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Immerse yourself in the natural unspoilt beauty of the high country's sparkling clear lakes, glistening blue rivers and fresh mountain air.
Mt Sunday (Edoras)
Mt Sunday, a roche moutoné (a low, rounded hill shaped by a glacier) was the site of Edoras in the movie “Lord of the Rings -The TwoTowers”. Mt Sunday gained its name because boundary riders from the high country stations used to meet there on Sundays.
Day trip into Mt Sunday
‘Nestled deep on a Canterbury high country station was the set for Edoras, the fortress city of the Rohan people in theThe Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. The spectacular location on Mount Potts Station, in the Rangitata river valley in the Ashburton district (around 2.5 hours drive inland from Christchurch) seemed purpose built for the production; a sheer-sided hill in the middle of an expansive plain, bordered by impassable mountains of rock and ice. The production crew took nine months to build the set atop the cliffs, during which time the locals peeked around to see as much as they could. The finished product looked otherworldly and strangely historic, a testament to the truly remarkable atmosphere of the area.
Director Peter Jackson and his team, actually worked from inside the buildings that were constructed for the Mount Potts set - the interior scenes from Edoras were filmed several months beforehand in Wellington, so the large buildings in reality served as shelter and extravagant food tents for the approximately 1000 cast and crew!
The journey to Mt Sunday (Edoras) takes you through rural, exposed land where weather conditions can be highly changeable. The Alpine altitude means the area can experience extreme weather and temperature changes.

Fishing in the Ashburton istrict
The Ashburton River is snow fed and so can be silt laden during the early part of the season. The river from a point just upstream from the township of Ashburton consists of two separate branches. The South branch offers the most consistent fishing throughout the year as it has the more stable water flow. The north branch is prone to drying during the hot summer months, particularly after water is taken for irrigation. While the river can often be quite cloudy and dirty early in the season, the water is generally very clear from early summer through to the end of the season.
The river mostly runs over a shingle beaded and is easily waded. There is good bank side cover of willows, scrub and gorse, particularly in the lower reaches. The water is generally very clear and fish are easily sighted in the pools and riffles on clear days. In the southern section below the confluence of the two branches, there can be an excellent evening rise on warm evenings.
During the drier summer months, the river flow can diminish dramatically and during these conditions fishing can be very challenging, particularly during the day. Extreme caution is required as the water tends to be crystal clear and the fish very spooky.
The major salmon fishing area is around the mouth and in the lower reaches. The salmon congregate around the mouth waiting for the river flows to increase after rain before making a run upstream to spawn. The best times to fish for these feisty fish is from late January through to mid to late April.
Nearby rivers renowned for salmon fishing are the Rangitata and Rakaia rivers. Fishing licenses and equipment can be purchased from any of the sports stores in Ashburton.
Fishing is also available at the Tinwald Domain (children only) where good numbers of large trout can be landed or Lake Hood which has been stocked with Salmon, trout and Carp.
For more information about fishing in the area either contact a local sports store or click on HERE to view the NZ Fishing website. Contact number for the Mid-Canterbury Anglers club is 03-308 2168
