A resource consent application to build a mega storage lake in the Mid Canterbury foothills has attracted 95 submissions, more than half against the project.
The irrigation storage pond proposed by Rangitata Diversion Race Management Limited will be the equivalent of 12,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
The irrigation company says it will have benefits for both farmers and the environment.
Environment Canterbury said 95 submissions had been received in response to the resource consent applications, and 38 submitters wanted to be heard in support of their submission.
Fifty-five were against it and 39 were in support.
The project involves 12 Environment Canterbury and one Ashburton District Council consent applications and involves major earthworks.
ECan will now appoint commissioners to hear the applications at a public hearing.
