Drop three of my boys off for an adventure yesterday. An overnight hike into the Mount Somers area. Starting at the Sharplin Falls car park they walk into Pinnacles Hut and onwards to the Woolshed Creek Hut.
The walk has a posted time of 6hrs. Most people visiting the Woolshed Creek Hut walk in from Jig Road which is a short distance inland from Mount Somers on the Mt Somers Hakatere Road. Walking in from this entrance will taken you between 1 1/4 to 2 1/2 hours.
After an evening of cards and marshmallows the plan was to be up and hike up to the Bus Stop and traverse the South Face of Mt Somers through open tussock hill country and beech forest before descending back into the pick zone of the Sharplin Falls carpark.
I've received a text suggesting that I buy them ice cream at the Staveley store which has always been given as a reward after a trip into the hills either hunting or walking.
What an adventure and one I'm sure we're about to hear about. But not till after they have showered! :-(
I wonder how many Pokemon they captured in the Winterslow Range?
If you interested in a walk either short 20-30 minute stroll to an epic multi night excursion you can find out more by visiting the Department of Conversation website. It has a great site with walking tracks and huts marked on it for all of New Zealand.
Regards
JW
